Today’s all-out attempt at the Arizona legislature to pass a statewide expansion of taxpayer-funded private school vouchers is shockingly irresponsible. At a time when we should be investing in education, this approach only drains resources from our public schools.
This legislation is a back-door way to de-fund public education on a massive scale. Our state does not lack for school choice, and Arizonans of all stripes have been loudly calling for more investment in public education — not this. It’s stunning that, after asking for bipartisan support for Proposition 123 on the promise to invest in public school classrooms, the Legislature would pull this kind of bait-and-switch on Arizona voters.
Editor’s note: The above opinion was in response to the April 6 scheduled vote on twin bills (Senate Bill 1431 and House Bill 2394) to universally expand private school vouchers in Arizona.
