I am writing to express deep concern about advertising that has appeared in this paper and others in Arizona. The ads are placed by out-of-state lawyers who are quite simply trolling for lawsuits.
The ads target certain skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in our community and use old, out-of-date information about “problems” that were actually addressed and solved a long time ago. The ads are frightening, misleading and wrong.
My concern is the effect this has on families already facing the very difficult decision to place a frail, vulnerable family member into long-term care. The choice itself is stressful enough; for these lawyers to prey on these families and put them under even more pressure is simply outrageous.
There are hundreds of excellent facilities available throughout the state, staffed by professionals who work very hard to care for their residents. Families should most definitely seek the facts, visit multiple care communities and ask lots of questions to make the best choice possible.
But families also need to know that these ads, taken out by legal firms, aren’t providing useful data; they’re just looking to make a few bucks by finding new targets for their lawsuits.
