Forty-three years ago this week the top news stories for the June 8, 1972. Apache Sentinel, the precursor to the Mesa Independent newspaper, included: Some 300-400 volunteer and partly-paid volunteer firefighters from throughout the state will gather in Apache Junction for a weekend Associated Firefighters of Arizona convention. Demonstrations were to be held in Apache Junction and at Williams Air Force Base in Mesa.
