Mesa’s Broadway Recreation Center, 59 E. Broadway Road, will hold a grand re-opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 29.

The Broadway Recreation Center was severely damaged during the floods last year. Since then it has undergone extensive refurbishing that included new maple hardwood floors, automatic bleachers and a coat of fresh paint, according to a press release.

“Many of our programs were displaced due to the repairs,” Arizona Disabled Sports Executive Director Lane Gram said in the release. “Our athletes are excited to come back through the doors and will appreciate all the upgrades.”

Owned by the city of Mesa, but managed and operated by Arizona Disabled Sports, the rec center was originally built in 1961 when it was the former Mesa High School gymnasium. Today it operates as a rental facility with a 96-foot-by-120-foot gymnasium and an activity room, and is home to the Gene Lewis Boxing Club, roller derby and recreation opportunities for individuals with intellectually and physical disabilities.
