Maricopa County Workforce Development Division, in partnership with the city of Mesa, will open a new youth center in the East Valley. Genesis Youth Center will have its open house 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, Maricopa County and the city of Mesa dignitaries and officials are scheduled to attend the event. The youth center is housed in the lower level of Mesa Main Library, 64 E. First St. in Mesa, according to a press release.
Genesis is a Workforce Investment Act funded youth program that provides employment and educational services to eligible low-income, youth ages 14-21, who face significant barriers to employment. Genesis services in-school and out-of-school youth, youth with disabilities and low literacy rates, as well as others who may require additional assistance completing an educational program and acquiring an industry-recognized credential or entering employment. Services at the youth center include résumé writing classes, job readiness workshops, career exploration and other opportunities.
“We can talk about how troubling the high school drop-out problem is, or we can do something about it,” Supervisor Steve Chucri said in the release. “Genesis is one thing Maricopa County Workforce Development is doing that is an investment in the future of the young people of the East Valley, offering them a second chance at schooling, a GED, job skills or higher education.”
