Upper Iowa University moves to EVIT campus

Upper Iowa University has relocated its education center in Mesa to the campus of East Valley Institute of Technology. Students began classes at the new location on June 29.
UIU-Mesa now occupies Building 15 on the EVIT main campus at 1601 W. Main St., Mesa. Previously, UIU-Mesa operated out of the Fiesta District at 1361 S. Alma School Road.
A nationally accredited career and technical education school, EVIT offers 40 occupational training programs to high school students and adults who live in 10 East Valley school districts. High school programs are tuition-free; adult programs are tuition-based, with financial aid available to those who qualify. Two out of three EVIT students go on to higher education with many of them using their EVIT training to secure employment to help pay their college tuition, according to a press release
“In our continuing effort to meet the needs of all Mesa-area residents, Upper Iowa University is very pleased to be located on the EVIT campus,” said Dr. Kurt Wood, UIU provost and executive vice president.  “The EVIT location, including easy access to mass transit and free parking, provides outstanding benefits to all students and further strengthens our commitment to meet Mesa’s higher education initiatives.”
“We are equally pleased to partner with Upper Iowa University. This partnership will benefit both of our institutions, but most importantly, it will benefit EVIT students by giving them another option for higher education,” EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey said. “Our students, especially our health students, will be able to take a year of training through EVIT and then a year of education through Upper Iowa University to obtain an associate degree. This type of partnership is prevalent in other states and long overdue in Arizona.”
In addition to a RN-to-BSN nursing program, the UIU-Mesa Center offers programs in accounting; business administration; criminal justice; elementary education; human services; human resources management; psychology; public administration (general, law enforcement or fire science emphasis areas); and social science. UIU students also have access to the university’s extensive online offerings in certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and masters. Face-to-face classes at UIU-Mesa can be combined with online courses to complete a UIU degree.
UIU-Mesa is part of the city’s Higher Education Initiative, which brought satellite campuses of several colleges and universities to the Arizona community in 2013.
